Thread: Brand new ball drilled wrong!!

Default Brand new ball drilled wrong!!

I was excited to pick up my new ball from the pro shop Friday, and after numerous adjustments to the ball by the driller, including changing the finger inserts and opening up the thumb, I proceeded to bowl a couple of games, but could not get the ball to release properly.
I am an intermediate, left handed bowler, and this is my first fingertip grip ball.
Thinking it was just me and not the ball, I did not think much of it.
I bowled four games yesterday and still could not get the ball to release properly, and my hand is in a lot of pain.
After getting home last night, I started investigating the problem. Here is what I found out. When I put my thumb in the hole and rest my fingers over the holes with my palm slightly off the ball, the first joint on my middle finger lands on the center of the middle finger hole(good). the first joint on my ring finger lands on, or slightly past the far edge of the ring finger hole,(what the @#$%). Then I tried placing just my fingers in the holes, and resting my hand on the ball with my palm slightly off the ball, and the center of the thumb hole is underneath my palm, about half way between the base of my thumb and the crease of my wrist!
It looks as if the thumb hole needs to be about an inch to the right.
I am upset that I did not notice this from the start. The pro shop is closed today so I did not show him yet.
I have no idea how these situations are handled, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, serial bowl! Being a new bowler myself, I'm afraid I can't recommend much. However, I recently got some advice from my ball driller/coach. The fingers, in a conventional grip ball (I'm not sure on fingertip grip) should create a 90 degree angle at the knuckle joint just outside of the finger holes. Also, bowling balls can be re-drilled. The bowling ball, however, will lose structural integrity. Clearly then, you would need to replace the re-drilled ball sooner than what is typical. Hope this information helps, and feel free to ask me or the other board members any questions that you have!

Thank You Bowling Wonder and I appreciate your trying to help.
I am aware of my options, such as plugging, but I just spent $175 for a new, properly drilled ball, not a plugged ball.
What I am looking for is someone who has had their BRAND NEW bowling ball drilled wrong, and if the pro shop acknowledged the fact that they messed up and replaced the ball.

Striker12, This is a new Hammer Nail, and yeah, were all human and make mistakes. He used a smaller diameter urethane thumb slug, so I was entertaining the idea of replacing that with a large diameter slug so we could move the hole to the right as much as possible without having a repaired ball, but then I thought about the pitch of the hole being wrong also,and........
What am I nuts, this ball has to be replaced. Does anybody disagree?

Who ever drilled your ball should replace it, especially if he wants to keep you as a customer. This error was entirely his fault, not the drill or the ball. Is he the owner or manager of the shop? If not go to one of them and talk to them about it. He drilled the ball so it doesn't fit your hand, it's not just a bad layout. Drillers should not make mistakes this big and not be responsible for it. Luckily for me the biggest mistake my driller ever made when drilling my 3 balls is that he used the wrong color thumb slug. He was supposed to use green but used white instead.

I agree with Josh, no way I would put up with that. I'd talk to the pro shop guy first and see if he will make good. Then the manager and then the owner of the lanes. If none of that works I would discuss my contacts in the press and online, that I would make this mistake cost him a hundred times more if he didn't make it right. I've had to do that several times with other purchases.

That said, start off nice. You can always ratchet it up a notch. If you start off angry and mean, there is nowhere to go. Good luck.

That's what I was thinking all along. Thank You Josch and Backahead, those are the replys I was looking for. I just needed that little bit of reassurance.
I just hope this guy stands behind his work. Should I give him another shot at drilling if he will replace the ball?

yeha and serial if you do get it redrilled think of this you just lost a part of your core soo it will not do the normal hook that it should if it was only drilled once.

and josh i use white thumb slugs reason why ik a few people that have the same balls as me other then my HHR and they all use slugs and fingers grips but not one of them had a white pairsoo i went with white took abit to get use to the whtie ones but i did not mind switching from orange and green to white

Sure, so long as he understands that another mistake means he's buying you another ball. He can chalk the mistake up as a biz expense and deduct it from his tax bill so don't be too forgiving. If I order a car with green paint and it shows up in white, I don't want them to spray a coat of green over it you know, I want a new car factory green. In my hot dog business, if someone orders kraut and I give them onions by mistake, I don't scrape off the onions...I throw the dogs out and start fresh.
