Looks like this is shaping up to be the season from hell. As soon as I walked in the center, my mood shifted from an upbeat positive to a forget about shooting any big scores tonight feeling. Every single pair the league bowls on was occupied by high school kids, supposedly practicing for the varsity team. As I looked around, I couldn't believe how much the sport has diminished if this was the best bowlers from the school. Many scores I was seeing weren't even breaking 100, and this was not due to experimentation. It was apparent these kids had no clue. There were maybe 3-4 decent bowlers and the coach was devoting all his time to these kids. I wanted to go down there and slap him upside the head and say that you have alot more bowlers on the team than these 3-4, and they already understand how to shoot spares, get general reads on lane conditions, etc. The other 40-50 kids needed him much more for the basics and mechanics. Needless to say, all these kids spraying the ball all over the lanes was going to mess up the pattern, and of course the house didn't put any fresh oil down, only allowing about 10 minutes from when the kids vacated the lanes to our start of practice. Had 37-38 which normally scores really well, but it was apparent after only 2 practice shots on 37 that this lane was going to be trouble. Changing speeds, balls, and lines didn't seem to keep the ball off the headpin. The heads were just too burned up to get a good shot on 37. Lane 38 was a different story. The ball skidded nicely through the heads and ended up in the pocket nearly every shot. Not that this really helped my scores much as I left more than my share of splits on 37. The only bright spot I could take away from this is that I made all my spares. Next week its back to 39-40, and I will be throwing the Virtual Energy to the showers. This ball is way too strong on the backends and I will go with the Big One, Total NV, and Mutant Cell. Could have really used the Big One this week as I think this ball may have had a chance to score on 37. I am really becoming discouraged this season with the way the league has been treated and with the general practice of this house. Hope better things to come on 39-40.
