I used a mongoose for a short period in time, but I was struggling with my manly hood! Being retired, and not working the tall buildings, towers and bridges, how do I put this,,, I felt the need for support!
Now I have morphed to levels I thought might not be possible at my advanced age! A number of 700 plus series, two 300's in that last 6 months!
Well I did it,,, on the way back from league the other day, a guy standing on the street corner stuck out his hand asking for money, I gave him my Mongoose!
A week later, I ran into that same beggar, at the bowling lanes, throwing great games, all 200 plus! He thanked me, and said that the Mongoose was one of those life changing experiences that gave him his life back! He is back with his wife now, holding down a full time job, and goes to church every Sunday!
I told him not to forget........ pass the mongoose to another in need!!
My fellow bowlers, it is truly better to give a Mongoose, then to receive one!! Unless that special person is in need!!
It had it place with me for a very short period in time, but now I have evolved to a new level of wrist free bowling. .. "I will never return!"

I've tried a few different style wrist supports, with no benefit in my score or confidence. The biggest factor for me is, they just feel uncomfortable and sweaty after a few throws.
Maybe when I get older, I might need the support. Until then, WRIST FREE FOR ME!!!

I believe 90% of women need wrist supports.
Teens might need wrist supports.
Men with very small wrists or not so strong men might need wrist supports.
Men who are using a wrist support as a training device need...you know
Men who have passed the training phase and have normal or strong wrists DO NOT NEED WRIST SUPPORTS! The best place for a mongoose is the zoo or wherever mongeese live.

I thought about getting a wrist support after converting to fingertip grip. I walked into the pro shop and Tim said "You don't need one." and refused to even show me any.

I'm 33, ex-military, in good shape, lift 3 times a week, and still use a wrist support. Ya'll hate all you want, it helps simplify my mechanics and I like it...
I just ordered a Mongoose Lifter (about 10 minutes ago...) to replace my very old and smelly Robbie's, I should have just Paypal'd Iceman to ship his..... Doh

I have been using a wrist support since 1978 when I started bowling. My wrists are not strong enough to hold a ball with a straight wrist or a little cupped. I don't use the one that goes all the way up the arm or one that you adjust for a cocked or cupped wrist. Mine goes from the palm and back of my hand up to about 5 or 6 inches from the hand. It doesn't seem to hinder me from cupping my wrist a little.I tried bowling without it and forget it.

Yes X military here also! Drafted during the Vietnam War! Good for you that your work out, as do I! Its the best way I know to keep everything working properly!! I think as a starter, the mongoose is GREAT!! It will train the wrist to keep a good position on your delivery!
Then after a while, bowl without it now and then! It took me to a new level of wrist position! I now bowl without, but it did help give me that feel, of not opening the wrist while letting the ball go, and causing the ball to flatten out going into the pocket!
The mongoose is very comfortable also... you will like it!

I bought a simple AMF Dick Weber II and wore it for about 100-150 games as I tried to get my approach/release right. I liked it…one less thing (wrist) to worry about when I threw. I stopped using it Thursday, then left it at the alley…then bowled perfectly fine without it on Friday…so I probably won't get another one.
I have small wrists, but am fairly big and have big hands. I thought the wrist support made things easier and more consistent. But I also think it kept me from cupping my wrist and interfered a little with my grip and thumb insertion.

I don't like using the glove, but I'm currently using the Robby Rev III. I had the mongoose last year and it really didn't work very well as I ended up hyper-extending my hole fingers when using it (odd issue to have, but it sucked). I chose the RRIII for the same reason I chose the mongoose, it allowed me the flexibility to use on my cross ally spare balls without taking the thing off. A bone spur in the lower part of my hand, sitting at a keyboard for 20 years, tennis, etc have left my wrist a little worse for wear.

I've been mixing in taking it off during my practice sessions, ultimately I'd like to go without it but right now I don't wanna get rid of the life jacket.

After 2 serious wrist injuries from falls I wear a Storm Wristglove with the metal removed. It just helps keep my wrist tight. I have a customer who wears a Storm Gadget and before that a Cobra. He has 30+ 300's and 24 800+ series. He has also averaged 230+ for the last 10+ years. So in reality it's whatever works for you

vdubtx - I started with one like that a few years ago and it was perfect for what I needed! Just needed a bit extra support of the wrist and it made it easy to adjust my throw between spare and strikes.

I understand you wearing one due to injury, but your friend? Are his scores as good without the wrist bowing enhancing devise? Does he have an injury also?
Did he do all of the 300s/800s with a wrist support? I can relate to falls, I had 2 bad ones as an Iron Worker putting up steel,,, First one I broke my neck, but was lucky,, I live with the pain, and then a lower back, L5 and L6 herniation, along with stenosis, and scoliosis, my feet feel like they are on fire, and tingle all the time, so I many times were sandals to bowl.
I wonder where I would be if I would have taken up the sport in my 20s, 30s, 40s 50s,,, I just got started 3 years ago, at 62,, I was in a lot of pain then, but have worked through a lot of it, and feel much better now then each of the last 2 years.
I just stuck with it, working out, eating right, gave up all my bad habits what few I had, supplements,,, good pure drinking water, and organic foods as much as possible,,, Now 700s are coming around more often, and two 300s within the last 6 months..
Wrist devises should be used for practice only, unless you have a doctors excuse due to injury! (:)
I wounder what percent of pros if any were wrist supports?? Anyone know of a top money winner that wears one?
Are they legal for Pro's?
I can actually say that the doctors were TOTALLY WRONG,, when they said I would be in a wheel chair, if I didn't take they medications, that I know would have destroyed me! RA, lupus are many times a death sentence also... which 5 doctors said I have based on blood tests!
Changing a life style can save a persons life, and make them a pretty good bowler! I will never be like your friend Storm1, but then I got started very late, and with many health issues to work through! But guess what,,,, I have felt better each of the last 3 years!
I know I will have more 300s, and that 800 this fall sometime... been close,,, 780 a few weeks ago,,, 725 a month ago... in spite of my age, and disabilities.
Storm1, what's your friends name, and USBC number,,, would be cool to take a look at his remarkable scores..

I am just going to say it! Wrist machines/deviceses/performance inhancing do-dad's, should be inllegal!
What I am saying is, where does it STOP?
Balls that can make a sloppy throw come back to the pocket even when you miss your target by 10 boards... Wrist devises that you can dial in what pitch you want on your release, whats next,,, its like taking the sport out of the game!!
I think if your healthy, and don't have injuries to your wrist, you should do 90 days for wearing a performance inhancing wrist device! 90 days hard labor!
Everyone is talking about how easy it is to throw 300s.... Quit making error correcting balls that find the pocket regardless of where you throw the dang ball!
Real Men and Women,,, burn your wrist cheating devises, AFTER YOU LEARN HOW TO BOWL!
Pretty soon they will have battery operated Androids, that you can use to ball in place of YOUR SELF!! Where will this all end??????
Be a MAN,,, or WOMAN,,,, bowl like then did in Jesus's time,,,, I do!
If I bowled my third 300 wearing the Mongoose, I would feel like a Cheetah!!! :p

If you had done it in your twenties, you might have gone pro and then who would have put up all that steel and iron, and taught the next generation of iron workers?
There is no reverse in the automobile of life, you can only go forward. You can change your course or change your speed, but you can't go back.
Like bowling, there is only the shot at hand. If the last one was bad, you learn what you can from it and put the bad result out of your mind and focus on doing the next one right.
Very few pros still use wrist devices. They can only use ones that are P.B.A. approved, meaning the manufacturer has paid the P.B.A. off. Mike Scroggins, an 8 time Tour winner with 2 major titles and 1.9 million dollars in tour prize winnings, is one of the few who still uses one.

If you wanted to be good back in your 20's/30's, a lot of what you would have learned would actually be detrimental to the modern game.
It was much harder to obtain friction between the ball and the lane, so your revs would have been higher than current, and your speed slower.
Consistency was at a much higher premium than it is today.
Those same skills would cause significant over reaction today.

No its not OK.... I want to be Born Again!! Give me them old time bowling balls, it's good enough for me! Tell me its not getting rediculus when a broken down X Iron worker at 65 can bowl 300s!! THATS NOT RIGHT!! I think the bowlers of the 50s 60s where much better bowlers then now days!
Back then it meant something to hit your mark, (no forgiveness factor built into the ball).
If you wear a brace for MEDICAL reasons, that's one thing, but if you have a healthy wrist/body, why wear a dial in what ever wrist position, cheating device?
It should be part of what makes the game a sport, not easier!! LOL No wonder they stopped giving out rings, or should I say ONE LIFETIME RING! They, USBC , were going broke with guys like me 65 throwing 300s .... !
Let face it,,, their should be Jail time for anyone using cheating devises,,, I could list dozens of others,,, like TAPE!!! How good would Norm Duke be without that cheating TAPE he uses!! He goes through a box of it each game!!! Ask yourself this: "How good would Norm be witout his tape!!!! I rest my case!
Yes,,, TAPE,,, it starts out tape, then boozes, then kicking their pets/dogs,,, next thing you know, WRIST Performance Enhancer Bowling Devises!!

Its also a form of cheating doing that damn energy slide transfer thing! All the energy you need is in a ( energy bar, or drinks ), all natural not something

This being Sunday, did Moses, or even the apostles mention wearing bowling shoes?????? I rest my case!! It's time to cleanse the sport of all this sin, and cheating ego enhancing devises!!

Hey, I got an idea. Let's get rid of wrist supports and just have everybody man-up. If that is the case though let's have baseball players
get rid of their gloves and batting helmets and the catcher should man-up and get behind the plate with no equipment. Football players
should can their equipment then maybe they wouldn't hit the guy they are tackling so hard. Hockey players should go out on the ice like basketball players with just a tank top and shorts and the goalies have way too much equipment which only makes them braver to stop a hard rubber puck coming at them. I am sure more goals would be scored then. All that goalie equipment keeps the scores too low. Race car drivers should can all of their equipment and wear levis and a t-shirt like the old days. All of this equipment in each sport only makes them perform better and we can't have that if we have to get rid of our wrist supports. What we really have to do in reality is get rid of the macho guy stuff and use what we have to if needed no matter what anyone else wants to tell you. I was never an iron worker
and my wrists are not naturally strong. So I wear it because I need it and won't have anyone convince me otherwise.

I fricken agree with you hammer 100 percent~ When I played football from 7 grade through College, we didn't have all this girly protective equipment, and CRAZY protective rules that the NFL has today!!!
Hey Boxing is all about giving a guy a head injury!! A concussion!! Stop the blood flow to the brain amoung other things,,, have they changed that sport??
Other then gloves, rather then fist,,, (like in the good old days)!
If we are so worried about head injuries, why not STOP BOXING???
American Men, and Women,,, its time to start getting tough~~ we are turning into a soft give me high scores, with equipment that helps me with my bowling self-esteem!
Its time to bowl like in the old days!! No equipment, dress like a cave man, and do away with the bionic man supplemental equipment!!
Baseball still uses the OLD WOODEN bats!! (why?) because you can hit much further with the metal ones, and it would not be fair to the old record holders..... I want those Old Time Bowling Ball, made again!
Do away with the newer guidance system balls, that make even a below average bowler look good~
Do away with every week the House Pattern~~ make is a rule that you put a different pattern down each week,,,,
Then the 300 ring will have a very HIGH COVETED MEANING AGAIN!!
And as for you wearing your wrist guard,,, if a doctors says you need it to bowl, I understand! But it its just weak,,,, MAKE it Strong,,, that's what I do!!
I was not born with the strength of a lion, I developed it working out.
I can give you some good exercises that will help!

I agree!!!!! The lanes are WAY TO EASY,,, look at me, broken down old man, and 2 300's, in less then 6 months, plus a 780!! That's NOT RIGHT!! I can handle the better balls, (no pun intended), but the blocked easy house pattern week after week, and week, after week,,,,, Needs to be a thing of the past!
All league should be like the pros bowl, a different sports pattern each week, then start over again! Too many bowlers that think they have what it takes to play with the Pro's!! Those same bowlers with 220 averages would be lucky to hit 200, or 190 on a challenging pattern including myself!!
Sports pattern at least make the game a challenge, and similar to the pro's!! All the equipment, super balls that correct even bad shots, giving you and 10 board target that gets the ball to the pocket... When will it end???
All of us house pattern bowlers, are not as good as we think,,, Real Men Bowl Sports Patterns!! Very little challenge to a blocked house oil pattern!
Storm1 do you know any top Pro's that wear wrist support??? I think its a bad habit to stick with, ONCE YOU learn how to bowl! UNLESS you have a physical injury, weak wrist not included, and a MD gives you a permit, to use one. I have yet to see one in the last 5 years that wears a wrist support.
Everybody has to have that 230 average.... but is it really an accomplishment, when you consider the HOUSE PATTERN, and just to make it even more easy add them da## Dial a pitch wrist guidance systems!!LOL LOL (:)

Here in Fairfield, we're trying to start the next generation off on the right foot. The junior league, except for the bumper bowlers, is using almost all sport patterns this season. Last Saturday was the first exception. I think the reason was that they get the same pattern as the Sport league uses the following Monday, so they would have been bowling on a pattern called "Pure Evil". Not sure if Chris thought the pattern would be too frustrating for them or if he didn't want to deal with hysterical parents, upset that their little angels were being exposed to "Pure Evil".
The patterns really don't make a difference to the kids who are just learning and are still trying to figure out how to throw the ball the same way twice. The ones who know how to hook the ball are getting used to the idea that strikes aren't automatic and that they have to put the same effort into making spares as they do the first ball.

Like Jason/Bowula/The Dude,,, we can't find one in our area!!! I would bowl one in a SNOW BALL Minute if I could find one!!!! The problem is that most bowlers want to brag about what a heck of a bowler they are, and have that block house pattern TO THANK!! LOL
You are not truly a GREAT BOWLER unless you bowl like the PRO'S!!! on Sports Patterns!! Real men, don't need the EGO of House Patterns, we need more Sports Pattern Leagues available!!
Bowling house blocked patterns, is a lot like comparing miniature golf, to the real deal!! You Great Bowers with that 230 average, try bowling the REAL DEAL, and if ,,,, IF YOU can still hold a 200 or higher average,,,, YOU ARE THE REAL DEAL,,,,, You are the Real Deal Mr Bowler!!
Not the miniature golf version of Bowling that we think is the standard!
God as my witness, I will FIND A SPORTS LEAGUE, and Join,,, even if I have to commute by airplane!!! Join me fellow bowlers and tell you bowling establishments YOU want the SPORT back in BOWLING!!

Winning and losing is LIFE,,,, but making things so easy as to give the EGO a huge boost, is not what made America STRONG! What made America Strong, and will keep us strong is requiring Sports Patterns at all our bowling lanes...... I just hope its not to fricken late to save this once Sporting Nation!

What's next ICEMAN, no balls to throw strikes? Just stare down the pins and have them scatter at the sight of a mean look from people. Oi.......
If you have that mean enough of a look vdubtx,,, you might be tougher then ME!! LOL I can have a pretty mean look, but rarely do they fall when I give them THAT LOOK,,,, I have had a TEN pin turn to VAPOR one night, after I gave it (THE LOOK!)
I will never forget that night, I had 9 in a role 10 pin leaves,,, Jason was there as my witness, (Strike and Spare)!

If you want more of a challenge, go out on league night and bowl with just your plastic ball all 3 games. Then if bowl a 300 game or 800 series you got something to crow about.

I don't think I have ever read anyone on this website say, and post their scores based on a Sports league? Is there a web site that the BiG Boys go to that bowl the sports patterns?
I know,, iceman your don't bowl one, but I would do it in a snowball minute if I could find one close to where I live! I will work on it!!!
It would be COOL if this website had a POST YOUR SCORE SPORTS PATTERNS THREAD!! Each person could post their scores, and what pattern, and maybe the HIGH game and LOW game of the night! Just a thought!
I think on Awardscom they should specify what pattern a person bowled, along with the three scores... Should be a special honor for like the U.S. Open 300 game!

It's not about a CHALLENGE-per-say! We could bowl on our knee's, or like I did in the seniors league last year, backwards, upside down, with my head between my legs!!
We simple want to make it a level playing field with the Pro's! Make it mandatory that ALL SANCTIONED LEAGUES rotate sports patterns each week!
In golf when I play the back tee's, say at a famous golf course, (you pick one, any one!), If I have a great score, I can take pride in the fact that I beat Tiger Woods on that given imaginary day,,lol!!
What IN THE WORLD WOULD BE WRONG WITH THIS RULING!! Why the SPECIAL EGO inflating oil for Joe, need my Ego stroked public???
Don't we have more PRIDE THEN THAT!! GEEEEEE....
It's like I said, with the balls we have now days, with those DIAL a Everything Wrist Devises, Changeable Soles,,, Magic strike socks,, Tape,,, aiming devise correctional glasses that compensate for a not perfect house oil conditions,,, Strike cologne,, super absorbent oil removing towels for oil, ect ect...
When Will IT END, this need to make bowing NOT a SPORT, but an Automatic 300, each and every time out!! My God,,, Bowlers,,, is this what we have evolved into????

Sorry but all I hear is a lot of condescension and arrogance and no actual experience. I respect your desire to experience more of the sport and suggest you get out there and do so. But, for me, here is the bottom line:
Bowling on nothing but your same alleys house shot 4+ times a week for a few years and getting two 300s is great, don't get me wrong, but you're a long way away from having the scores and experience with the sport as a whole - THS, sport shot, tournament, or otherwise - to make a judgement on anyone else about what equipment they use, what pattern they bowl on, what scores they do or do not post, or otherwise...

And I realize that most of the time you're just being goofy and playing around but it can come off as arrogant and I honestly just don't see where you get the bowling "street cred" to be so judgemental.
I'll shut up on the subject now, it's a free country and you're entitled to your opinion as much as I am. I do appreciate all you contribute to these forums and the fun posts you make as well as the serious ones.
Just giving you my 2 cents on it.

When I was a kid, I dreamed of growing up to play center field for the NY Yankees, like Micky Mantle. By the time I graduated from high school, at 5'8", 125lbs, with an amazing ability to drop any baseball that touched my glove, I knew that dream was not going to come true. For 99% of us, whether the sport we dreamed of is bowling, baseball, football or cricket, by the time we grow up we know we're not capable of being professional athletes. The vast majority of amateur bowlers know that they're not really that good, and have no desire to have it proved to them on a weekly basis. To make all sanctioned leagues bowl sport patterns will kill the sport.
I do agree to a certain extent that the THS does favor bowlers who throw a hook, but since most bowlers can learn how to throw some sort of hook, I don't consider this to be patently unfair. As for all the "guarantied strike" gimmicks that you decry, many of them have been available to the pros for years. Its just that when urethane balls were developed a lot more amateurs showed interest in them than the manufacturers expected. They though the market would just be the membership of the PBA and maybe a few dozen high level amateurs. All of a sudden the equipment manufacturers realized their market for high end stuff was a hundred times bigger than they thought.
While I agree that THS bowlers with averages between 200 and 220 who strut around like their as good as Pete Weber could stand to be taken down a few notches we should not, indeed can not, turn the clock back to 1979.

I don't think Michael's intent was to insult those of us who find that a THS is as much of a challenge as we can stand. I think his intent was to call out those bowlers who average 200 to 220 on the THS at their alley or throw a 300 on it and strut around like PDW.

I made this same case (or tried) with Iceman's bowling God Jamau24. I actually agree with Iceman and as I put it to his buddy....it isn't about discrediting anyone's house scores or 300s. I'm a FIRM believer that a person like me...who is a half-step above a beginner...has NO business criticizing someone that can average even 170 on THS. BUT...BUT...every sport has levels. I can't play basketball at the YMCA rec adult rec level...because I SUCK at basketball. That doesn't mean I should join a 6-10 year old basketball league then brag cuz I'm totally dominant.
If you're good...test yourself. Thats all (I think..sometimes he seems like he may be on mushrooms...so I'm not 100% sure) I think Ice man is saying. What have you got to prove playing in a "fun handicap league" when you're rolling 220s every night and have thrown 9 300 games this year. You're OBVIOUSLY too good for that league. So stop being a wuss and join a scratch league or play on a sport pattern or join a tournament. Because I GOTTA think (I don't know yet....but I hope to someday)...I GOTTA think that impressing newbie bowlers gets old after awhile. Like I said...there's this guy in my Friday league that has a 210 average and nearly throws a 300 game 1-2 times per night...and it's gotten so bad that if you go over and congratulate him he just kinda brushes it off and shrugs his shoulders as if to say, "Yeah...I know I'm good...I don't care...I missed 300 by 11 pins...missed it by 7...I've already rolled 3 this year so who cares?" You may not THINK thats insulting...but to a player that would consider just ONE 300 game a LIFETIME ACHEIVEMENT....it's a slap in the face.
ANd i completely disagree about the pro-bowler concept. I wanna be a pro. It probably won't happen...but that doesn't mean I'm just gonna resign to bowling handicap leagues the rest of my life. Bowling is one of the FEW sports...FEW FEW FEW sports...where a guy like Iceman, or JAnderson, or dhoffman, or Jamau, or bowl1820, or vdub....could walk out on any given lane on any given night...and WIN agaisnt a pro. It's not likely...but it's about 200,000 times more likely than returning a Serena Williams serve, hitting a Justin Verlander fastball, beating Kobe Bryant one-on-one, scoring a goal on Martin Brodeaur, or surviving a hit from Ndamukong Suh.
What seperates me from all the old timers who've resigned to just being as good as they are...is I have goals. I have goals I want to accomplish this year...and I'll have goals next year...and the year after that. And someday...I'll have a goal to get a PBA card...and maybe just maybe bowl in a tournament. Not win...not make a TV appearance...but someday? Someday??
There are bowling experts (google it) that have said in one way or another EXACTLY what Iceman is saying...far too many bowlers afraid of different alleys and different oil patterns...far too many fragile egos that can't stand the idea of bowling a 157. And thats fine. They will make their excuses...and those excuses are in the millions...but at the end of the day...those same bowlers have NO RIGHT to criticize lesser bowlers or complain about someone beating them due to handicap. And you wanna celebrate your 300...great. But at the moment you no longer feel the need to celebrate it (because it's your Xth one that year)...maybe you need to move on to the next challenge.
